But, on the way home, I was driving and the same high rpms were in place. We didn’t not mind, as since it was a daily driver and local hot rod/cruiser, it was set up to defend the car being very fast, at anytime and place. So much for driving a modified sedan set up for racing on a public highway. It was slow going as the motor sounded like it was winding very tight and probably strained a little if we gave it some gas. It was about 50 miles one way and with the 4:56 gears in place, it was not a high speed highway drive. In my brother's recovery period from the Willys Coupe accident, we went to the Winternationals in Pomona. If we wanted to still go back to the 1/4 mile drags, it would be in a Gas Coupe and Sedan Class with the motor “mods” we did. It was the best answer to any comers on the street. The motor wound very tight in all gears and even with a C&O Stick Hydro, the motor still sounded like it needed to shift into 5th or 6th gear if there was one. The use of the 4:56 gearing was for best overall performance, but the driving long distances to other hot spots in So Cal had its drawbacks. times always were the best overall and a top speed pretty close to the result from the 4:11 gearing. But, when the chips were down, the 4:56 Positraction gears were the best. times and gave us a top speed for our 348 Impala. In our reasoning, the 3:56 gears were the best for highway speeds, but did nothing for drag racing performance. The 4:56 gears were the best for all out performance vs the 3:55 gears. So, you will have to figure those out if you go that way. Having used 3:56 gears on the street, then getting a Positraction 4:11 rear gear set up and finally settling on a 4:56 Positraction for maximum performance, there are some drawbacks.
